New York City Public Advocate hopeful and Bronx Conservative Party Vice Chairman Gonzalo Duran hosted a press conference on Saturday, warning about what he termed a “rising tide of socialism” across the city. Speaking from the Bronx, Duran contended that socialist ideas could negatively affect both the borough and the entire city, with particular criticism directed at Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a self-identified Democratic Socialist.
Duran, describing himself as a moderate conservative, stressed that his warning was intended not only for Republicans and Conservatives, but for all New Yorkers who care about the city’s direction. “Stopping socialism,” he declared, “has helped bring us together around a common cause.”
Conservative Figures and Candidates Participate
The event brought together Bronx Conservative Party officials, members of the New York Young Republican Club Bronx Caucus, and the United Alliance Party, along with local leaders, advocates, and residents.
Multiple City Council hopefuls addressed the audience: District 11’s Denise Smith critiqued current education strategies, claiming they’ve led to a drop in academic performance. District 8 candidate Tyreek Goodman emphasized housing and economic fairness, while Emmanuel Findlay Jr., running in District 16, discussed job growth and employment justice.
Christopher Reid, who chairs the New York Young Republican Club Bronx Caucus, matched Duran’s concerns and strongly criticized Mamdani’s policy positions.
Appeal for Political Collaboration
Duran highlighted his longstanding work connecting Conservatives and Republicans throughout New York City, attributing successful coalition-building to concrete actions rather than just speech.
“Uniting Conservatives and Republicans across the city took years of dedication,” Duran remarked. “Gaining the confidence of organizations like the New York Young Republican Club required more than promises—it required results.”
Looking forward, Duran said he now seeks to bridge the broader political gap by approaching Democrats dissatisfied with current leadership. He pointed out a recent endorsement from former Queens Civil Court candidate Dr. Julie Milner, suggesting additional Democratic support could soon follow.
“I’ve brought Conservatives and Republicans together citywide,” Duran stated. “Next, I’m reaching out to Democrats who are equally frustrated by failed leadership and empty promises.”
