Brooklyn Backlash: Senator Slams Mayor’s Homeless Shelter Plan in Sheepshead Bay

Posted By Todd Betzold

The battle over Brooklyn’s backyard is heating up. While the New York City mayor wants to place a new homeless shelter for 175 families in the heart of Sheepshead Bay, not everyone’s rolling out the welcome mat. Now a New York State Senator is leading the charge against the plan, calling it a “direct assault” on the fabric of hardworking family neighborhoods and vowing to fight it with every legal and legislative tool at his disposal.

State Senator Opposes Mayor’s Latest Move

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to put a proposed site that would house 175 families with children and include around-the-clock security in Sheepshead Bay. Residents of the neighborhood are not happy with the move.

Now State Senator Stephen T. Chan has strongly criticized the City’s decision to place the homeless shelter in the middle of Sheepshead Bay. Senator Chan called the move a direct assault that endangers the integrity of the hardworking family neighborhoods.

“The City’s Administration wants to put a homeless shelter in the middle of our neighborhoods, next to schools and day care centers. In our backyards. In our communities. And they expect us to stay quiet?,” Senator Chan stated. “Is it any wonder why the people of Sheepshead Bay are furious? Is it any wonder why families who worked their whole lives to build a safe and stable community for their children to live in are now saying enough is enough.”

Mayor’s Priorities Are Completely Out of Touch

Senator Chan represents parts of Brooklyn and he sharply condemned Mayor Adams’ latest move trying to place homeless shelters in residential family neighborhoods. Chan said the mayor’s priorities are completely out of touch with what Brooklyn residents need.

According to the press release, Senator Chan. reiterated his commitment to stand with the Brooklyn community. He said he plans to fight against the proposed homeless shelter and will use every legal and legislative option he has available.

Currently Under Review

In the press release, Senator Chan goes on to say, “Homeless shelters don’t belong in our residential neighborhoods, period. We will not stand for this. We will not be quiet. We will not let this city punish the people who built it. Sheepshead Bay is not a dumping ground. It is a neighborhood. It is our home to elderly, to children and families. We are going to defend our community at whatever costs.”

The Senator said his office is currently reviewing all legal, legislative, and procedural actions they can take to block the shelter. They are working to ensure that the voices of the community are being heard.
