Hochul’s Endorsement of Mamdani Sparks Debate: A Closer Look

Posted By Todd Betzold

Governor Kathy Hochul has lent her endorsement to Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 New York City mayoral contest, providing a major boost to his campaign while also intensifying divisions among voters, especially in the city\’s Jewish community.

Upon declaring her support, Hochul openly acknowledged differences with the 33-year-old Queens legislator. “We don\’t agree on everything, and that\’s OK,” she remarked, noting their conversations have been candid and sometimes contentious. Even so, she described Mamdani as “a champion for making New York City more affordable.”

Jewish Voters Divided Over Mamdani

Hochul specifically addressed ongoing concerns among Jewish voters, many of whom remain split over Mamdani\’s bid. “We spoke about the urgent need to fight antisemitism,” Hochul stated, highlighting Mamdani\’s outreach to Jewish community figures.

Yet not all organizations are convinced. Sara Forman, New York Solidarity Network executive director, voiced her disagreement. “We do not support her choice to back Zohran Mamdani, who lacks alignment with our values,” she said.

A recent July survey by the organization revealed only about a third of Jewish voters back Mamdani, with stark divides along religious and generational lines. Reform Jews and younger constituents expressed more support, while Orthodox and older voters indicated higher levels of resistance.

Progressive Jewish groups, on the other hand, applauded Hochul. Alicia Singham Goodwin, political director at Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, stated: “Zohran\’s vision is resonating powerfully with New Yorkers, including Jewish communities.”

Concerns About Business and Safety

In addition to religious divides, Mamdani’s views on the economy and public safety remain in question. Hochul emphasized the importance of New York maintaining its global business edge and mentioned she urged Mamdani to ensure law enforcement is well-resourced to protect public spaces.

While some business interests withheld comment, organized labor groups rallied behind Mamdani. 32BJ SEIU President Manny Pastreich praised Hochul’s support, saying: “Together, we can do much more to address affordability for all New Yorkers.”

Hochul’s endorsement propels Mamdani into the homestretch of the campaign with establishment momentum, but challenges from moderates and business sectors persist.
