Major Political Shift: Velázquez Not Running for Re-Election

According to a report by NYC Newswire, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez has opted not to seek re-election in 2026, wrapping up a career spanning more than thirty years in the U.S. House of Representatives. In her speech, Velázquez reflected on her work, stating, “Serving the people of New York City for over three decades has been my life’s greatest honor. I am thankful to everyone involved in this journey—none of these accomplishments were possible without your support.”

Elected in 1992, Velázquez assumed office in 1993, becoming the first Puerto Rican woman in the House. Throughout her long service, she became well-known for championing small businesses, advocating for immigration reform, expanding affordable housing, and representing neighborhoods across NYC.

Currently, she represents the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods such as Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Long Island City, Ravenswood, Hunters Point, and Dutch Kills.

Velázquez’s upcoming retirement is expected to create a hotly contested race in 2026. No major candidates have entered the field yet, making the Democratic primary a likely highlight as prospective candidates weigh entering the race.

Her decision has sparked reactions from local leaders. Renee Collymore, an experienced advocate, former district leader for Clinton Hill/Ft. Greene, and the current Democratic Liaison of the 57th Assembly District, praised Velázquez’s years of service.

Collymore stated, “We express gratitude to Rep. Nydia Velázquez for her dedication both nationally and to issues like immigration. She was a tireless defender of all New Yorkers, especially Puerto Rico. Serving 16 terms in Congress, she set a strong standard. Our district looks forward to supporting someone who will continue her legacy of fighting for rights, opposing policies that hurt seniors, veterans, or immigrants, and safeguarding vital healthcare. Wishing her the best in the future.”

Velázquez’s departure marks the beginning of a new era for NY-7 as preparations start for the 2026 elections.
