New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Tuesday welcomed nearly 1,100 new police recruits, marking the largest hiring class since 2016.
With 1,093 individuals, this class exceeds a previous record under Adams earlier this year. The NYPD’s total hires for 2025 now stand at 2,911, the highest since 2006.
A New Wave of Diverse Officers
Beginning their Police Academy training this week, the recruits reflect the city’s diverse makeup—representing 51 countries, speaking 34 different languages, and featuring 80 veterans.
“The most strategic move for the NYPD right now is to onboard more capable officers,” Tisch said. “That’s why we’ve concentrated on recruiting and developing the next era of officers. With Mayor Adams’ steady backing, the NYPD will keep drawing top talent to keep the city safe.”
According to Adams, the class embodies a smarter, stronger NYPD. “Safety comes before everything else,” he said. “Together, we’re reversing the ‘anything goes’ mindset, enhancing life in our neighborhoods, and ensuring New York is the safest large city and the best home for families.”
Recruitment Up After Policy Changes
The hiring surge comes after recent recruiting reforms. The NYPD cut its college credit requirement from 60 to 24 credits, reinstated a timed fitness test, and added a new credit award, granting academy graduates 45 credits.
These changes prompted a sharp uptick in interest. Daily job applications jumped over 300 percent, and a recent exam drew over 5,000 candidates in two weeks.
Advances in Public Safety Under Adams
Officials say these recruits support progress in public safety. Shootings from January to July reached record lows, with overall major crime down 5% year-over-year. Since Adams took office, over 23,200 illegal firearms have been confiscated.
The city’s 2026 budget dedicates $3.4 billion for an approximate force of 34,000, with four academy classes planned for this year, and aims for 35,000 officers in 2027.
In total, nearly 10,000 officers have joined the NYPD under Adams’ leadership.
