Union Pool’s ‘Summer Thunder’ Returns with One of Its Best Lineups Yet

Posted By Todd Betzold

Brooklyn’s beloved backyard music series “Summer Thunder” returns this year for its 13th season of free Sunday shows and the 2025 lineup might be its most impressive yet.

A Season Full of Fan Favorites and Fresh Surprises

Kicking off on June 29, this summer’s series opens with indie favorite Frankie Cosmos, joined by the ever-charming Juan Wauters. From there, the schedule winds through an eclectic mix of genres, from vintage boogaloo to avant-garde experimentation.

Joe Bataan, the legendary Latin soul and boogaloo icon, returns on July 6, a Summer Thunder staple that always gets the backyard dancing. On July 13, experimental composer and Brooklyn native L’Rain makes her debut in the series — coming off back-to-back critically acclaimed albums, including Pitchfork’s “Best New Album” accolades.

Iconic Performers and Cult Favorites Round Out the Summer

Power pop stalwart Ted Leo hits the stage on August 3, bringing decades of punk-tinged songwriting with him. A week later, on August 10, the Gunn Truscinski Duo, the improvisational collaboration between guitarist Steve Gunn and drummer John Truscinski, returns to deliver their hypnotic blend of instrumental jams.

Other highlights include performances by Hannah Cohen, Alex Amen, and The Hard Quartet, plus a mysterious closer on August 24 that hasn’t been revealed just yet. However, there is a cryptic clue in the official lineup announcement for those paying close attention.

Backyard Beats, Tacos, and Brooklyn Vibes

Summer Thunder shows are held in the backyard of Union Pool, the Williamsburg venue that started life as a pool supply store and is now a fixture in NYC’s indie and DIY music scene. With late-night DJ sets, dance parties, and a fan-favorite taco truck, the venue offers a quintessential summer experience for music lovers.

All shows are free, 21+, and first-come, first-served — rain or shine. The venue fills up quickly, so early arrival is encouraged. Here is a full breakdown of the 2025 lineup:
