Chris Banks, a longtime advocate for residents of East New York officially kicked off his 2023 City Council campaign and he revealed his campaign website at Fusion East Restaurant, in East New York. He announced his candidacy for City Council in Brooklyn’s 42nd District, which covers the areas of East New York, including Starrett City, as well as parts of Brownsville, Canarsie and East Flatbush. More than 100 supporters came out to celebrate the kickoff.
Chris Banks stated, “we need a strong partner in city government to work alongside our state and federal elected officials to provide the leadership the community needs for the future of the district. For the past two decades our community has been shortchanged in resources and funding, which must change.”
Banks is running against Charles Barron, who is the current Council person in the district. Barron has been representing East New York in either the City Council or State Assembly for the past 21 years. Barron was in the City Council from 2002-2013, and then after he was term limited out, he went over to the Assembly. where he served from 2015-2022. He returned to the City Council again in January 2022. Whoever wins this Council race will take over the office in January 2024.
Chris Banks is a lifelong Brooklyn resident, born and raised in East New York. He is a former member of Community Board 5 where he has served as the co-chair of the Aging, Transportation, and Education committees, as well as serving as a member of the Executive Committee as the Sergeant at Arms. Since 2018 Chris has served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Boulevard Houses Nursery Day Care where he oversees several City Contracts of more than $1 million. He also wrote the green jobs curriculum and performed community outreach for the Italian American Civil Rights Group based in Starrett City and East New York.
“This campaign is all about the future of the district. We want progress and change in East New York, Brownsville, Canarsie and East Flatbush, but we want to make sure that hardworking community members aren’t pushed out in the process. This campaign is about homeowners, tenants, small business owners, seniors and youth, who call East New York home. Change and resources have to be brought in through meaningful legislation, which is what I intend to create, with transparent input from the community.”, added Banks.
