Jesse Chun: Subtitles Art Exhibit At BRIC On February 26th!

Posted By Pia Fergus

“Jesse Chun’s interdisciplinary work investigates the frameworks of language, identity and place through a process of unlearning, translating, and authoring. Subtitles is a conceptual poetry piece that employs the trope of a film narrative. In an investigation of consumer rhetoric and aspirations towards interior spaces, Chun appropriated select colors and sentences from various editorials in interior design magazines—choosing only the quotes that do not mention designers, products, or location. Employing the role of the artist as editor, she re-arranged the found texts into new conversations about memory, displacement, and transience of space. Projected onto BRIC’s garage doors, the subtitled narrative contemplates on interstitial spaces; at its core, Chun’s video questions the relationships between place and identity while making clear the discrepancy between the act of dwelling and the complex conditions of belonging.”
