Buzzworthy Restaurant of The Week – two8two bar and burger

two8two-1Brooklyn has no shortage of burger joints but Boerum Hill’s two8two bar and burger takes the humble patty-in-a-bun up a few delicious notches.

The relaxed 60 seater restaurant has become Brooklyn’s go-to spot for a juicy burger. Lawyers and court staff drop in during the lunch hour, and families and friends fill it up at night.

“People appreciate the fact that we take pride in our burgers. The meat is freshly ground every day and sourced from local butchers.” says Jonathan Maldonado who has worked at two8two since its inception. The menu also offers a smattering of other offerings – boardwalk style hot dogs, salads and nachos but burgers are the Holy Grail.

The best and undoubtedly the most popular are the two8two burger – a hamburger topped with roasted poblano chillies and the special two8two house sauce and the Billy burger, topped with grilled onions and named after two8two’s owner Billy Thanapoulos.

It’s the Billy burger that brings Red Hook residents Leslie Shipman and her partner Paul Pimsler here again and again. They learnt about it from friends living in the vicinity and have returned almost weekly. “I don’t think I’ve had a better burger in Brooklyn. The onion rings are great. Also service is excellent and it’s totally unpretentious.”

She’s right of course, the staff are ever friendly and the decor is extremely unfussy. It’s a spacious restaurant, with simple wooden tables and chairs and a small backyard.

The bar is seemingly as popular as the burgers. The drinks menu offers several delicious cocktails and Thursdays are bustling as they feature an all night happy hour, with Buffalo Trace bourbon and pints of beer going for just five dollars.
